We are delighted and proud to announce that filmmaker Edward Hermoza Kramer received an Emmy Award for outstanding
achievement in cultural documentary from the National
Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Pacific Southwest Region on Saturday, June 14, 2008, for his documentary
of the Coastal Communities Concert Band of Encinitas.
The 60 minute documentary, “Community Band – Our Lives in Music” is an in-depth study of the 80-member
concert band. “The Emmy is dedicated to conductor/director Don Caneva who reminds us all that while
our bodies are made up of 75% water, our hearts are 75% music.” stated Mr. Kramer. “The word ‘community’ is
common-unity and shows how music brings people together.”
The documentary contains interviews with director Don Caneva, composer/arranger Sammy Nestico and numerous
band and audience members. It captures the band in behind the scenes footage as they rehearse and perform.
“I want to thank Edward Kramer for capturing the true essence of the Coastal Communities Concert Band,” stated
Don Caneva. “The documentary is fantastic, and receiving the Emmy is the icing on the cake!”
The documentary
has aired numerous times on KPBS San Diego and local access stations and is available on DVD.
“Simply put, the film focuses on the importance of music in our daily lives,” according to Judy Thum, one of the
founders and a current member of the band. “Music education programs have been an offshoot of the band and
are a major focus of our outreach in the community.”
“It’s never too late to get involved with music, stated band
member Eleanor Tibbals-Pennington.
“Everyone needs to have something that feeds their soul,” said band member
Mimi Holtz.
